MINSK, 16 August (BelTA) - Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky announced plans to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday, 18 August, TASS reports.
“I intend to discuss all details regarding conflict resolution with President Trump in Washington on Monday. Grateful for the invitation,” Zelensky wrote on his Telegram channel following phone calls with Trump and European leaders.
Zelensky noted that their conversation lasted an hour and a half and was substantive. According to him, Trump outlined key points from his negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“We support Trump's proposal for a trilateral Ukraine-USA-Russia meeting. Ukraine emphasizes that key issues can be discussed at the leadership level, and a trilateral format suits this purpose,” Zelensky stated. He also stressed “the importance of European involvement at all stages to reliably ensure security together with the USA”.
On 15 August Putin and Trump held a meeting at Alaska's Elmendorf-Richardson military base. The three-hour discussions included multiple formats: a one-on-one conversation in the U.S. leader's limousine en route to the main venue, followed by restricted “three-on-three” talks. The Russian delegation included Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, while the U.S. side was represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. In his post-summit statement, Putin confirmed the Ukrainian conflict settlement was the meeting's central topic.
