‘They are up to something’. Lavrov comments on Lithuania's provocative statements

MOSCOW, 20 January (BelTA) - The actions and statements by the Lithuanian authorities give reason to suspect they are plotting something,  Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a news conference summarizing Russian diplomatic activities in 2025, BelTA has learned

“I am tired of monitoring, let alone commenting on, such statements by Baltic politicians. There is absolutely no basis for inflating this issue. By making statements of this kind, they achieve the opposite results,” Sergey Lavrov said in response to a request to comment on Lithuania's plans to turn its border region near the Suwalki Gap into a new fortified zone.

“It simply creates a natural feeling in Russia and Belarus that they [the Lithuanian authorities] are plotting something, that they are planning some kind of provocation to provoke us into specific actions and then appeal to the unity of the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance," the Russian top diplomat noted.

“Threats regarding Kaliningrad Oblast fall into the same category. Well, you know, we will not engage in an exchange of rhetorical threats, but everyone should be aware (and we have said it many times) that it would be suicidal for those who attempt such provocations," Sergey Lavrov said.

“But if they are concerned over the Suwałki Gap... I have seen a lot of video footage and photos. Soon, significant military resources will become available in Greenland,” the Russian foreign minister remarked sarcastically.
