"On Point"
MINSK, 12 February (BelTA) - The world has entered a new stage in the development of military affairs, and this is a reality that must be reckoned with, Doctor of Military Sciences, Professor Nikolai Buzin said in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“We are living through a new phase in the development of military affairs, and this is the reality we have to talk about. This stage is characterised by the integration of artificial intelligence and unmanned systems into every process on the battlefield. There is no turning back from this,” Nikolai Buzin said. “Space wars, armies of drones and robots - this will be our reality, if not today, then tomorrow or the day after.”
At the same time, the expert believes that combat operations will never be conducted solely by drones. This is due to the existence of weapons capable of neutralising even the most advanced technology, such as electromagnetic and pulse weapons. Moreover, a nuclear explosion could also render drones useless by disabling satellites. Therefore, Nikolai Buzin emphasized the importance of striking a balance between traditional and advanced weapon systems.
“Of course, we could completely abandon all older systems. But that would mean crippling our own economy and giving up numerous social projects. And our people would ask: what do we need this weaponry for in the first place?” he said.
In the expert’s view, a leader’s skill lies precisely in finding the right balance between conventional and innovative weapons. "Any leap forward in military affairs is determined not by the invention of a new means of destruction, but by equipping troops with that capability and training personnel to use it,” Nikolai Buzin stressed. “Today, we are seeing drones take on tasks once carried out by firepower and artillery during the Second World War. But drones cannot solve 100% of all tasks.”
