Senators pass statement due to Belarusian flag incident in Latvia

MINSK, 25 May (BelTA) – The Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus has passed a statement due to the incident involving Belarus' state flag in Latvia, BelTA has learned.

The statement reads: “Members of the Council of the Republic and the House of Representatives were outraged to hear about actions involving a state flag of the Republic of Belarus in Riga. This action represents a continuation of Latvia's unfriendly policy towards Belarus. The National Assembly of Belarus views it as a violation of international law.”

The statement continues: “Provocative actions of Latvian officials destroy the remnants of trust between our states, create tensions and delay the normalization of relations by an indefinite period of time. We would like to note that Latvia's unacceptable actions have not been condemned by other European countries. This silent agreement erodes the universally accepted foundations of interstate relations. The National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus demands that Latvia's political leadership should take immediate measures to prevent support for any actions meant to destabilize the situation in the sphere of international relations.”

“An incident involving the state flag of the Republic of Belarus happened in Latvia on 24 May. A session of the Presidium of the Council of the Republic took place this morning. During the session we decided we should not leave this unfriendly step of Latvia towards Belarus without a proper response,” said Chairman of the International Affairs and National Security Commission of the Council of the Republic Sergei Rachkov.
