Opinion: West uses sanctions in its fight against competitors

MINSK, 10 March (BelTA) – The West has come to use sanctions routinely in its fight against competitors, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives Andrei Savinykh told reporters. He is taking part in the meeting of Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Belarus Saeed Yari, BelTA has learned.

“Iran has been under the Western sanctions for more than 40 years. However, the country has found ways to counter the sanctions and is, in fact, one of the largest economies in the Middle East. This experience, I think, can come in handy now when sanctions are becoming a customary tool of the collective West to fight against its competitors,” Andrei Savinykh said.

The MP emphasized that Belarus has friendly relations with Iran. “Our cooperation covers literally all areas of expertise. Of course, it is limited by the sanctions that were unfairly imposed on Iran after the United States of America pulled out of the nuclear deal. We are closely following this process and support the efforts of the international community to return to international agreements that will be acceptable to all parties. In this case, we will have good cooperation prospects in almost all areas: in agriculture, engineering, oil refining, logistics. We are already actively promoting academic contacts,” he added.
