Aleksei Bashan elected deputy chairman of Belarus’ Central Election Commission

MINSK, 24 April (BelTA) – Aleksei Bashan has been elected Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus. This decision was made at the CEC meeting, BelTA has learned.

“In accordance with Article 145 of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus, members of the Central Election Commission are elected prior to the formation of the Belarusian People’s Congress. The election is based on the procedure that was in force before the constitutional amendments came into force following the 2022 referendum,” said Chairman of the Central Election Commission Igor Karpenko. “Thus, in accordance with Article 32 of the Electoral Code, the deputy chairman of the Central Election Commission is elected from among members of the Central Election Commission.”

Igor Karpenko suggested electing Aleksei Bashan for this role. “Aleksei Vladimirovich is a Candidate of Sciences [Law], professor, awardee of the Medal for Impeccable Service 3rd Class and 2nd Class, the Medal for Excellence in the Maintenance of Public Order,and the Honored Worker of Internal Affairs Bodies of Belarus title. He has published more than 90 scientific papers and methodological works on education,” the chairman of the Central Election Commission emphasized.

The candidacy of Aleksei Bashan was unanimously upheld.
