Lavrov: West continues providing massive support to Belarusian emigration opposition

MOSCOW, 24 May (BelTA) – The West continues providing massive media, political, and financial support to Belarusian emigration opposition. Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov made the relevant statement in an interview with the Argumenty i fakty newspaper, BelTA has learned.

The official believes the situation in Belarus has stabilized on the whole. Despite unprecedented external support the emigration opposition cannot disrupt the situation. “Most of the citizens are tired of street riots and recognize their counterproductiveness. Despite that Western countries are stepping up pressure on Minsk while simultaneously promising generous economic aid in exchange for ‘transition to democracy'. The Westerners have stooped so low that they threaten Belarusian civil servants and law enforcement officers with international criminal prosecution. At the same time massive media, political, and financial support for the Belarusian emigration opposition continues,” he said.

Sergey Lavrov hypothesized that Belarus' “well-wishers” will not stop at that. “We are concerned about Svetlana Tikhanovskaya's regular calls for mobilizing the protests in August-September 2021,” he said. “We hope the Belarusian nation will show the wisdom it is known for and will not follow the lead of those, who try to exploit the situation for their own selfish interests.”

Asked what assistance Moscow is ready to provide to its ally, the official said: “Naturally Russia will not abandon Belarus in distress. We are always ready to help our neighbor and strategic ally. Because brotherly relations and often family ties, common history and spiritual values are at the heart of our relations.”
