EAEU development concept described as forward-leaning

MINSK, 11 December (BelTA) - The concept of the development of the Eurasian Economic Union is froward leaning, Cuba President Miguel Diaz-Canel said as he attended a videoconference meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council. Cuba was granted observer status at the EAEU during the meeting, BelTA has learned.

Miguel Diaz-Canel assured that Cuba is committed to constructive cooperation in the EAEU. "We recognize the power of the EAEU and its prospects. We see that its concept is forward-leaning, accounts for national plans and development programs, gives priority to the main economic sectors of the member states in order to ensure better inclusion of these economies in the global production supply chains,” the Cuban leader noted.

He noted that Cuba has traditionally maintained friendly contacts with the states of the Eurasian Economic Union. Cuba and Belarus have signed a short-term action plan on economic and trade cooperation, a program of cooperation in education, an executive program of scientific and innovative ties in science, technology and the environment.

Miguel Diaz-Canel believes that there is a significant potential for developing cooperation in various areas with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia. He recalled that in 2018 a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Eurasian Economic Commission and the Cuba government, which created the basis of economic cooperation and trade diversification.

The Cuban leader also spoke about the country's efforts to combat the COVID pandemic and about the country's willingness to share its best practices.
