Conventional arms control seen as connective tissue binding pan-European security architecture

MINSK, 9 September (BelTA) - Permanent Representative of Belarus to the OSCE Andrei Dapkiunas took part in a meeting of the OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation (FSC), BelTA learned from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal, Secretary General for Foreign Affairs of Austria, outlined the priorities of Austria's Chairpersonship as he opened the OSCE FSC in Vienna on 9 September. They will include topics such as the Framework for Arms Control, the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda, military doctrines, small arms and light weapons, conventional ammunition.

Welcoming the emphasis of the Austrian FSC Chairpersonship on the traditional agenda, the Permanent Representative of Belarus to the OSCE Andrei Dapkiunas noted that the conventional arms control continues to be a connective tissue binding the pan-European security architecture.

The head of the Belarusian mission to the OSCE noted that Belarus is looking forward to a constructive discussion on security risks and challenges, which will feature a representative of the Belarusian Defense Ministry as a speaker, and is interested in exchanging views of military experts on military doctrines.

Andrei Dapkiunas noted that direct contacts between the military contribute to reducing tensions and restoring trust in the pan-European space.

Taking into account the accumulated national experience, Belarus is ready to contribute to the successful conduct of an OSCE meeting to review the implementation of OSCE assistance projects under the OSCE Documents on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and Stockpiles of Conventional Ammunition (SCA), the Belarusian diplomat said.
