Call to promote CIS economic interests outside CIS

MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) – It is important to promote the CIS economic interests outside the CIS territory, Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow said as he spoke at the online CIS summit on 18 December, BelTA has learned.

The president of Turkmenistan proposed to make the most of the possibilities of the Caspian Sea region in the CIS countries' economic cooperation. “The CIS member states can become the main channels of economic cooperation on the continent, in a broad sense they can act as connecting links between Europe and Asia. In view of this, I would like to stress the importance of promoting the CIS economic interests outside the CIS territory, namely, integrating neighboring countries and regions in our joint projects. First of all, this concerns developing transport and transit infrastructure, optimizing and increasing supplies of energy resources, and creating new communication lines. In this respect, we view the Caspian Sea region as promising. We suggest establishing here a modern system of joint logistics with participation of landlocked countries,” he said.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow believes that the CIS economic and social development as well as cooperation in culture and humanitarian affairs have a huge potential. “The CIS proves its viability, ability to deal with challenges and threats responsibly, and its importance as an instrument of interstate dialogue,” he stressed.
