
MINSK, 21 October (BelTA) – Chairman of the International Affairs and National Security Commission of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Sergei Aleinik has held a number of meetings with parliament delegations from various countries on the sidelines of the 151st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva, BelTA has learned.
Sergei Aleinik discussed in detail the bilateral agenda with focus on interparliamentary cooperation and trade and economic cooperation with Chairwoman of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Deputy Speaker of the People’s Assembly of the Republic of Srpska Edin Derlek, Head of the Delegation - Chairwoman of the Turkish Parliamentary Group in the IPU Asuman Erdogan, and Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of Equatorial Guinea Salomon Nguema Owono.
Apart from that, Sergei Aleinik visited the Geneva Center for Security Policy (GCSP) where he met with Executive Director Thomas Greminger. During the conversation the parliamentarian informed the other side about Belarus’ approaches to strengthening regional security, including in the context of Belarus’ steps to develop the Eurasian Charter of Diversity and Multipolarity in the 21st Century and the upcoming 3rd International Conference on Eurasian Security in Minsk.
The parties also exchanged views on the conflict in Ukraine and ways to resolve it. Sergei Aleinik stressed: “Today it is increasingly clear that there is no alternative to a political and diplomatic resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.”
The senator also recalled that Belarus had not only tried to stop the escalation of this conflict at the very beginning, but has also done everything possible to prevent it, acting for many years as a negotiating platform for the affected parties in the context of the Minsk agreements.
The Geneva Center for Security Policy was established in 1995 under Swiss law to promote and maintain peace, security, and stability. It was founded by the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection, and Sport in cooperation with the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.
