Belarusian MPs condemn Latvia's actions against Russian-speaking journalists

MINSK, 28 January (BelTA) - The Standing Commissions on International Affairs and on Human Rights, National Relations and Media of the House of Representatives have adopted a statement in support of the Russian State Duma's address "To the European parliaments on the repressive actions of the Latvian authorities against Russian-speaking journalists", BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.

“In connection with the adoption of the address "To the European parliaments on the repressive actions of the Latvian authorities against Russian-speaking journalists" adopted by the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of Russia on 23 December 2020 we declare that the members of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus join with the Russian colleagues in condemning the actions of the authorities of the Republic of Latvia to prevent professional activities of journalists, infringing on the interests of the Russian-speaking population,” the statement reads.

The MPs consider such actions as clearly unfriendly towards Belarus and Russia, which signed the Union State Treaty in 1999. “We advocate strict adherence to the obligations under international legal acts guaranteeing the right of all to freedom to express their opinions, receive and disseminate information and ideas without any interference from public authorities and regardless of national borders,” the Belarusian MPs said.
