MINSK, 19 November (BelTA) – The current situation at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border in connection with the anticipated reopening of border crossings by Lithuania was discussed in Minsk at an interagency conference organized upon instructions of the Belarus president and hosted by the State Secretariat of the Security Council, BelTA has learned.
Prime Minister Aleksandr Turchin, State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus Aleksandr Volfovich, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxim Ryzhenkov, Chairman of the State Border Committee Konstantin Molostov, Chairman of the State Customs Committee Vladimir Orlovsky, and Chairman of the State Security Committee Ivan Tertel took part in the conference.
After the conference Aleksandr Volfovich told reporters: “Mass media report that the Lithuanian government intends to reopen the border crossings that they themselves have closed. Since we see inconsecutive and unconstructive steps of the Lithuanian government, we keep an eye on the situation and constantly monitor it. This is why we have discussed the situation that obtains at the border as of today with all the interested parties. Regretfully, no official notifications about either the closing of border crossings or about opening have been received as of today contrary to international agreements.”
Participants of the conference discussed the possible steps that will have to be taken if Lithuania reopens the border crossings. “The Belarusian side did not close border crossings and has been ready for a constructive dialogue at the state level between the ministries of foreign affairs,” the state secretary of the Security Council stressed.
Aleksandr Volfovich remarked that the Belarusian side is ready for a constructive dialogue and for work.
