MINSK, 1 October (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxim Ryzhenkov told journalists whether his proposal to install a symbol of the new Berlin Wall near the UN headquarters was appreciated by the UN audience, BelTA has learned.
“Some people came up and gave us a thumbs-up for the creativity. Actually, it was spontaneous: ahead of my speech, we were just taking a stroll (we had a little time between meetings) on that lawn and stumbled on a piece of the Berlin Wall with an inscription stating that it was a 155-kilometer wall and that about 200 people died trying to cross it in search of a better life. I immediately had a thought: here is a wall, they are building one. Only this one does not divide East Germany and West Germany. It divides the West and us, the same West that once destroyed this Berlin Wall. It is also meters thick, and it is also long, only many times longer. And the number of people who have already died there is many times bigger,” Maxim Ryzhenkov noted. “And given that they are laying mines and barbed wire there, the parallels are obvious.”
The minister emphasized that the UN is aware of the problem, but people prefer to remain silent.
As was reported, addressing the plenary meeting of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Maxim Ryzhenkov unexpectedly proposed installing a symbol of the new Berlin Wall near the organization’s headquarters.
“Today, a much larger wall stretching thousands of kilometers is being erected on the EU border with Russia and Belarus – from Finland to Poland. Hundreds of people have already died since the construction of the wall began. Hundreds of innocent migrants from the southern countries who, seeking a better life, strive to reach the EU, which previously destroyed the familiar way of life in their countries. If we all together in the UN cannot prevent the construction of this wall, let us at least reserve a spot where we will later place a piece of this wall. When the relevant countries finally come to their senses and say that such a wall is no longer needed. We will display its length and the number of people who died there. And we will say that this is a trophy to freedom of movement,” Maxim Ryzhenkov said during the UNGA meeting.
