MINSK, 25 September (BelTA) – Belarus is eager to achieve even greater progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxim Ryzhenkov said at the high-level event on climate action in New York on 25 September, BelTA has learned.
The minister noted that the consequences of climate change are not as critical for Belarus today as they are for many other countries. At the same time, Belarus shares the general concern about this phenomenon.
“We are fulfilling our commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, undertaken under the Paris Agreement. We have already reduced emissions by more than 40% compared to 1990 levels and plan to do more. We are addressing the problem of climate change strategically, by effectively developing green and nuclear energy. By the way, let me recall the massive political storm that erupted around Belarus during the construction of our NPP. Today, it is obvious that this was driven by the protectionism of international corporations and the interests of some EU countries,” Maxim Ryzhenkov stated.
The minister also noted that Belarus, like many other countries, struggles to access technology because of Western sanctions and trade barriers. “If it were not for this, our contribution to the climate agenda would be even more significant!” the Belarusian diplomat emphasized.
In September 2021, a government resolution set Belarus’ national target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. As part of the implementation of the Paris Agreement, which regulates measures to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from 2020, Belarus committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 35% by 2030 compared to the 1990 level.
