MINSK, 6 July (BelTA) – Spokesperson for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mironchik commented on the reasons for nominating Belarusian diplomat Alena Kupchyna for the position of the secretary general of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), BelTA has learned.
“We believe that the OSCE will benefit from her expertise and experience today. She may really help the organization and its member states reach the goals it has been pursuing since its inception,” Dmitry Mironchik remarked when speaking about the reasons that prompted Belarus' decision.
The spokesperson said he thinks it is not appropriate to make public comments on the procedure of appointing the OSCE Secretary General, especially at this ‘delicate' moment. “This is about an appointment, not an election. The OSCE procedure differs from the procedure of selecting and appointing the UN secretary general,” Dmitry Mironchik specified.
He said that the Belarusian candidate has received considerable support from the OSCE member states. “I would like to stress once again that, in accordance with the OSCE procedures, this support should not always be public. Let us wait for a while,” Dmitry Mironchik added.
