Belarus attends meeting of UN Inter-Agency Task Force on Chernobyl

MINSK, 17 April (BelTA) - Belarus Permanent Representative to the United Nations Valentin Rybakov took part in the meeting of the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Chernobyl at the UNDP headquarters in New York on 16 April 2019, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The event reviewed the status of implementation of the UN General Assembly resolution “Persistent legacy of the Chernobyl disaster” and the results of cooperation in this area over the past year, discussed proposals on further cooperation and possible elements of the new Chernobyl resolution to be adopted during the next session of the UN General Assembly.

Valentin Rybakov informed the participants of the meeting about the measures undertaken by Belarus to promote the social and economic development of the Chernobyl-affected regions, noting the unique experience accumulated by the country in this field and the willingness to share it. “The Belarusian diplomat laid out the proposals of Belarus on international cooperation on Chernobyl with the participation of the UN system and interested states and called upon WHO, FAO and UNICEF to engage more actively in project activities in this field,” the press service said.

Valentin Rybakov also informed that Belarus is organizing an event together with Ireland, Ukraine and the Irish charity organization “Chernobyl Children International” at the UN Headquarters on the occasion of the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day.
