Belarus' ambassador lays flowers at monuments to eminent Slavic figures in Moldova

MINSK, 25 May (BelTA) – The Days of Slavic Writing and Culture are running in Moldova on 24-31 May. This is one of oldest traditional cultural events of Slavic nations that facilitates the development of the intercultural dialogue and strengthens friendly ties between various ethnicities that live in Moldova, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Embassy in Moldova.

Representatives of the Belarusian Embassy in Moldova took part in the ceremony to lay flowers at monuments to prominent figures of Slavic writing and culture – Stephen the Great, Francysk Skaryna, Alexander Pushkin, Peter Mogila, Taras Shevchenko, and Hristo Botev.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Moldova Anatoly Kalinin gave a welcoming speech at the flower-laying ceremony at the monument to Francysk Skaryna. “Today we celebrate the creators of the Slavic alphabet Cyril and Methodius and proudly commemorate our compatriot Francysk Skaryna – a figure of the Renaissance, a writer, and the first book publisher. This event symbolizes the spiritual and cultural unity of the Slavic nations and helps strengthen friendly ties between them,” the ambassador said.

During their history, Slavic nations had to respond to tough challenges, Ambassador Anatoly Kalinin noted. He hopes that this celebration will unite Slavic nations, help enhance peace and concord between them and uphold ancient traditions of the Slavic brotherhood. “Recently, the authorities of some countries have tried to force upon us alien values and rewrite the history of Eastern Europe. Let's preserve and respect the things that we got from our ancestors and be proud of who we are,” he noted.

The event brought together delegations of the embassies of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Bulgaria as well as representatives of Moldova.
