Ambassador: EU is trying to topple Belarusian government with the help of sanctions

MINSK, 21 December (BelTA) - The European Union is waging a hybrid war against Belarus and is trying to topple the government with the help of sanctions, Belarusian Ambassador to Finland and concurrently to Denmark Aleksei Samosuev said in an interview with the Danish newspaper Politiken, BelTA has learned.

"We are a country of 10 million. The EU has a population of a half a billion. It would be foolish of us to try to destabilize the European Union. It looks more like the EU is waging a hybrid war against Belarus and is trying to topple the government with the help of sanctions," the ambassador stressed.

According to Ambassador Aleksei Samosuev, there is no correlation between the spring EU sanctions and the sudden flow of migrants. In fact it is the European Union that is responsible for the flow of migrants, he said. "Obviously, these people are fleeing their devastated countries. It is clear that it was not Belarus that forced them to do this, but the states that were involved in military conflicts in their countries. There was not a single Belarusian soldier in Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq and so on," the diplomat said.

He called the EU sanctions against Belarus uncivilized. "The migrant crisis could have been avoided if the EU had not frozen all Belarus-EU projects to protect borders and set up accommodation facilities for illegal migrants and refugees,” Ambassador Aleksei Samosuev said.
