Christmas rite in Chechersk District

The rite “Carrying the Icon and Candle” is performed in the village of Repishche in Chechersk District on Christmas Day.

During the Great Patriotic War the village was burnt to the ground. After rebuilding it, the villagers purchased the Nativity of Christ icon. In line with the tradition, a new house hosts the icon every year.

This tradition has survived to this day, although only 15 native residents live in the village. They gather for a festive service and after breaking the fast carry the icon to another house. The road along the path of the icon is covered in straw, the ceremony is accompanied with prayers and songs.
