Development, production of unmanned haul trucks by Belarusian BelAZ overviewed

MINSK, 11 February (BelTA) – How the Belarusian heavy truck manufacturer BelAZ develops the production of unmanned dump trucks has been revealed to reporters by BelAZ Director General Sergei Lesin on the sidelines of the forum “Technological sovereignty: IT resource for industry”, BelTA has learned.

Sergei Lesin said: “BelAZ is one of the world leaders in manufacturing mining vehicles and machines. Certainly, we keep track of market trends and work on increasing the efficiency of operation of our vehicles and increasing the profits of our customers. The solutions we offer today are autonomous unmanned haul trucks. They truly produce an effect for our customers. We have been working on the idea for quite some time. We had to resolve the problem on our own. We’ve made several generations of haul trucks like that. We started implementing one of the pilot projects in Russia in 2019. In an open-pit coal mine in [the Republic of] Khakassia. We are now moving towards completing the implementation of the project to create a completely national product both with regard to the haul truck and with regard to software.”
In his words, in order to reduce costs and the implementation time, BelAZ has partnered with a company, which has the necessary competences and resides in the Hi-Tech Park. “We are satisfied with the result. Literally tomorrow we will meet with an anchor client and will discuss parameters of the first project involving the national product, including the hardware and the software. It is very important that without making substantial changes to mass-produced vehicles, thanks to the use of software products we are adding new qualities to our product that can improve the performance of the vehicles and reduce costs. It generates profits for our clients and increases our competitive ability on the market,” the director general noted.

Sergei Lesin also dwelled on several technological peculiarities of the unmanned haul trucks. “5G is used for communication while artificial intelligence is used to plan how the autonomous vehicles go about accomplishing their tasks and for responding to changing conditions inside the quarry,” he added.
