Belarus joins Geneva Act on legal protection of industrial designs

MINSK, 15 April (BelTA) - Belarus has joined the Geneva Act on legal protection of industrial designs, BelTA learned from the press service of the State Committee on Science and Technology.

Belarus has signed a law to accede to the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Industrial Designs. The Geneva Act governs the international system of registration and legal protection of industrial designs (design of products), the committee explained.

Currently, the Geneva Act unites 65 states, including Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and others. Thus it will be easier for Belarusian applicants to obtain legal protection of industrial designs and keep patents on them in force simultaneously in all states participating in the Geneva Act.

The State Committee on Science and Technology explained that in order to obtain an industrial design patent in any member state of the Geneva Act, an applicant needs to draw up one international application in one language and send it to one agency (the International Office of the World Intellectual Property Organization). Costs are minimal (one set of duties in one currency). Belarusian applicants will also be able to reduce expenses on obtaining legal protection of their industrial design simultaneously in several member states.
