Belarus' investment session due in London in May

MINSK, 6 February (BelTA) – Belarus' investment session will be held during an annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London in May, EBRD President Suma Chakrabarti told reporters in Minsk on 6 February, BelTA has learned.

“Now the main task is not to lose the accumulated potential and to continue to build it to take Belarus to higher positions in our ranking, to make it more attractive for investors. This year we are taking efforts together with the Belarusian government to realize this potential. In May, an investment session dedicated to the Republic of Belarus will be held in London as part of our annual meeting,” Suma Chakrabarti said.

In his opinion, this is a wonderful opportunity for the Belarusian government to draw attention to the country, to tell about itself and to attract new investors.

Another area where the EBRD provides support is the organization of a meeting of the Foreign Investment Council. Suma Chakrabarti specified that the event will probably take place after the summer of 2020.

“Such foreign investment councils have proven their worth in countries such as Kazakhstan, Georgia and others. They have proved to be a very effective tool to attract new investors,” the EBRD president believes.

Belarus' Prime Minister Sergei Rumas asked Suma Chakrabarti to support the Belarusian initiative to arrange a national investment session in London in 2020 during an annual meeting of the EBRD Board of Governors. “We are convinced that the organization of this event will allow presenting opportunities for investing in Belarus in front of the business community. As you have been able to make sure out of your own experience, Belarus is a country, which is open to foreign investments and offers conditions for effective business,” the prime minister added.

The EBRD is an international bank, which facilitates the development of the private sector and entrepreneurship initiative. The EBRD shareholders include 69 countries, the European Union, and the European Investment Bank. Since the EBRD began working in Belarus in 1992, the bank has invested nearly €2.9 billion in 130 projects implemented in various branches of the national economy. In 2019, the EBRD set a new record of its activity in Belarus by investing more than €390 million in 24 projects in both private and public sectors.
