Belarus’ grain harvest about 95% complete

MINSK, 31 October (BelTA) – Belarus has harvested 94% of areas planted to grain and leguminous crops, including maize, which makes up 2.172 million hectares, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry.

“As of 31 October, a total of 10.275 million tonnes of grain, including rapeseed and maize, were cropped in Belarus, which was 390,000 tonnes more than on the same date last year,” the press service reported.

The regional breakdown is the following: Minsk Oblast – 2.541 million tonnes, Brest Oblast – 2.069 million tonnes, Grodno Oblast – 1.994 million tonnes, Mogilev Oblast – 1.333 million tonnes, Gomel Oblast – 1.282 million tonnes, and Vitebsk Oblast – 1.056 million tonnes.

Average grain yield (including maize) is 42.7 centners per hectare, which is 4.9 centners per hectare higher than last year’s level. 

The harvest of flax straw totals 195,000 tonnes, with a yield that is 12.9 centners per hectare higher than the previous year.

Maize for silage and green fodder has been harvested from 96% of the area, which is 975,000 hectares. Some 13.895 million tonnes of haylage (99% of the plan) and 18.861 million tonnes of silage (91% of the plan) have been prepared so far. Forage production has reached 9.4 million tonnes (93% of the target).

Sugar beet has been harvested from 81% of the area, which amounts to 87,000 hectares. The harvest has yielded 4.512 million tonnes of sugar beet. The yield is 39.1 centners per hectare higher than last year. To date, 77% of the harvested beets have been delivered to processing plants.

Some 672,000 tonnes of potatoes have already been harvested.

Nationwide, 178,000 tonnes of open-field vegetables have been harvested. The total sown area exceeds 8,000 hectares, with 91% of it cropped now.

Autumn ploughing has been carried out on 565,000 hectares, representing 39% of the target area of 1.432 million hectares.
