Belarusian wrestlers win gold, bronze at ISF Gymnasiade 2018

MARRAKESH, 7 May (BelTA) – The Belarusian wrestlers won one gold and one bronze medals at the 17th ISF Gymnasiade, which is underway in Marrakesh, Marocco, BelTA has learned.

The gold medal was collected by Alesya Getmanova, a student of the Mogilev State Olympic College, who defeated an athlete from Hungary in the final. Kristina Zdunkevich, a student of the same college, clinched bronze in the victory over an athlete from Brazil.

“I am happy with the results,” said Olga Pavlova, the coach of the Belarusian women's wrestling team. “The girls are doing really well, despite the fact that we are very far away from home. Christina is still recovering from her injury. We will not stop at what we have achieved. We are determined to show a high result and make it into the top three states in the medal count,” she added.

The 2018 Gymnasiade is underway in Marrakesh and Casablanca, Morocco from 3 to 9 May. Taking part in the sport forum are over 3,000 athletes from 59 countries, including England, Brazil, Egypt, India, China, Russia, the United States, Turkey, Ukraine, France. The program includes 18 sports: archery, athletics, chess, fencing, rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, aerobics, judo, karate, swimming, tennis, wrestling, box, cycling, golf, petanque, surfing, taekwondo.

Belarus has fielded 42 students to compete in seven sports: fencing, wrestling, athletics, tennis, box, rhythmic gymnastics and swimming.
