WANO to check Belarusian nuclear power plant before launch

MINSK, 30 May (BelTA) – The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) will check the Belarusian nuclear power plant before it goes online in 2019, BelTA learned from WANO President Jacques Regaldo on 30 May.

The WANO president said: “Participants of the WANO conference, which is going on in Minsk these days, will visit the Belarusian nuclear power plant site. Certainly, we will evaluate all the improvements that have happened up till now. Besides, in the future we will check the nuclear power plant before the first fuel is loaded and before the power plant goes online.” Such inspections are a good WANO practice, he believes.

The state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant joined the World Association of Nuclear Operators in 2016. According to Jacques Regaldo, WANO's experience is used during the construction phase thanks to the membership. “The conference in Minsk demonstrates the openness of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. Experts from ten countries are present here and they are ready to share their experience with you,” added the WANO president.

The international conference of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) is scheduled to take place in Minsk on 30 May – 1 June to discuss support for new power-generating units of nuclear power plants. The seminar is supposed to allow sharing the best international practices in operating nuclear power plants for the sake of reaching the highest safety and reliability standards. Specialists are expected to discuss support for new power-generating units, safe nuclear practices, licensing, personnel training, and other matters. Participants of the conference are expected to visit the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant on 1 June. Taking part in the event are WANO experts from Russia, the UK, France, Hungary, Japan, China, Pakistan, Finland, the UAE and other countries as well as IAEA representatives.

WANO unites all the operators of nuclear power plants (a total of about 450 power-generating units). The organization is intent on improving the safe operation of all the nuclear power plants in the world.
