UNHCR representative in Belarus points out advantages of welcoming migrants

MINSK, 28 April (BelTA) – Giving jobs to migrants is profitable for the welcoming country, too, BelTA learned from UNHCR Representative in the Republic of Belarus Jean-Yves Bouchardy during the roundtable session held to discuss refugee employment in Minsk.

According to Jean-Yves Bouchardy, refugees and stateless persons work for state-run enterprises and international companies and generate benefits for the Belarusian society. Although they sometimes require additional assistance with preparing for the jobs, the country benefits from employing the refugees. The practice minimizes freeloading and dependency on social welfare. It allows refugees to pay taxes and contributes to the establishment of a favorable economic situation.

The UNHCR representative said that more and more employers consider hiring refugees and stateless persons for various jobs. With a view to further improving the employment of refugees the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees works to find new partners and establish cooperation with the private sector. For shelter seekers, refugees, people in need of additional protection, and stateless persons a job is not only an important platform for building friendship and getting welfare benefits. It also guarantees long-term stability. Jobs allow migrants to make a social and economic contribution to the society in addition to getting access to the resources they need to start a new life.
