UN representative: Active public involvement is needed to achieve human rights goals

BREST, 26 October (BelTA) – Implementation of the UN recommendations on human rights is impossible without active involvement of all sectors of the society. Adviser to the UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus Viktor Muntyanu said at a seminar held in Brest on 26 October to mark the 70th anniversary of the United Nations and to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between nations, BelTA has learned.

Viktor Muntyanu noted that the signing of the UN Development Assistance Framework for Belarus for 2016-2020 was a landmark event. The document outlines the main cooperation areas. “We have laid down the groundwork for further cooperation, set the pace for the development of our relations. We hope to intensify our cooperation in many fields. One of the tasks is to promote the implementation of the UN human rights recommendations. We will manage to achieve the stated objectives only with the participation of the trilateral alliance of international organizations, local authorities, and the whole civil community,” Viktor Muntyanu emphasized.

The seminar hosted by the Pushkin Brest State University was held as part of the large-scale campaign UN70 Express organized in Belarus to mark the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. Its participants discussed cooperation between Belarusian organizations and agencies with the United Nations in education, gender equality, and migration. Special attention was paid to human rights.

“The Belarusian side is a skillful promoter of human rights. First of all, it has set a course towards education. Secondly, this field is not politicized. In the future we will share our developments. For example, we will disseminate materials on how to defend a person without coming into conflict with the state,” President of the International Society for Human Rights Marat Zakhidov said.

Brest is hosting many events to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. For example, the Brest Oblast Youth Art Center is playing host to workshops, exhibitions and presentations. Specialists have gathered at school No. 1 to discuss matters of social integration of people with disabilities. The celebration program also features a visit to the Brest migration center. Besides, a session of the youth parliament will take place at the Brest City Hall.
