Students from five countries join Memory Watch commemorative event

MINSK, 24 April (BelTA) – Belarusian State University took part in the international volunteer civil patriotic event headlined as 15 Days to the Great Victory on 24 April, BelTA learned from the press service of BSU.

“Students from universities of Belarus, Russia, Moldova, Azerbaijan and Kirghistan carried the Memory Watch near the Great Patriotic War memorials on 24 April. Active BSU students carried the Memory Watch near the memorial to BSU students and professors killed in the war,” stated the source.

Since February, students-members of BSU students - BRSM Youth Union members have taken part in the events to clean up the memorial stone plate with the names of soldiers buried at Minsk Bratskoye cemetery, to tend to the memorial to Nikolai Gastello's plane crew in the village of Radoshkovichy, and to tidy up the Trostenets memorial complex. Besides, the students have been actively engaged in the scientific research on the history of the feats of their compatriots – holders of the Soviet Union hero title.

Five countries plan to organize 425 students' Memory Watches that will feature about 3,300 young people. The project is dedicated to patriotic up-bringing and strengthening the cohesion of the students' community. BSU was the first Belarusian university to join the international Memory Watch in 2016.

For the first time the international volunteer civil patriotic event 15 Days to the Great Victory took place in Samara, Russia, in 2010. It was initiated by the regional youth community Samara Oblast Student Council. The event became international in 2014 with 268 Memorial Watch posts organized in Moldova, Azerbaijan, Kirghistan and Russia. More than 2000 students took part in the event.
