Reports about reactor vessel accident at BelNPP construction site refuted

MINSK, 26 July (BelTA) – Internet media reports about an alleged accident, which has damaged a reactor vessel, fly in the face of reality, BelTA learned from representatives of the ASE group of companies, the general contractor for the project to build the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

Speaking about the substance of the issue, the source said that the reactor vessel is outside the reactor compartment. There are no technical obstacles that impede the reactor vessel's installation into its intended position. The general contractor is waiting for the oversight agencies to give a go-ahead to installation operations.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is a project to build a VVER-1200 type nuclear power plant 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The BelNPP will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW). In line with the general contract for building the nuclear power plant the first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2018, with the second one to go online in 2020.
