Parliaments of Belarus, Azerbaijan agree to set up science foundation

MINSK, 11 October (BelTA) – The parliaments of Belarus and Azerbaijan have agreed to set up a science foundation, Chairman of the Milli Mejlis Oktay Asadov told the media after the talks with Chairman of the Council of the Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich on 11 October, BelTA has learned.

The parties agreed to set up a parliamentary science foundation. A special working group and also the National Academies of Sciences of the two countries will be involved in the project.

The MPs also discussed the development of cooperation in tourism, prospects for regional relations. According to Oktay Asadov, Minsk and Baku are ready to assist them entering a new level.

Chairman of the Council of the Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich emphasized the confidence and openness of the meeting, which considered important issues of mutual interest. The speaker thanked the parliamentarians of Azerbaijan for the active support of Belarus in the international arena. As an example, he cited their vote on the draft PACE report on the situation in Belarus in June. The Azerbaijani delegation supported the position of Belarus in the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Eastern Partnership EURONEST at the session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, which was held in Minsk in July. Azerbaijani parliamentarians were the co-authors of the Belarusian resolution on developing timely and effective legislative, regulatory, and administrative measures to respond to the emergence of new psychoactive substances.

The parliamentary delegation of Azerbaijan led by Chairman of Milli Mejlis Oktay Asadov arrived in Belarus on 10 October. The program of the visit through 13 October includes meetings with the leadership of the Belarusian parliament, Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov. The parties are discussing issues related to the development of inter-parliamentary cooperation, trade and economic cooperation between the two countries and other matters of mutual interest. The Azerbaijani MPs are expected to visit a number of industrial companies, and also the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War.
