Neonatal intensive care unit opens at clinical hospital No.6 in Minsk

MINSK, 4 January (BelTA) – A neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) opened in Minsk city clinical hospital No.6 on 3 January, BelTA has learned.

The unit can accommodate six little patients at a time. It has the necessary equipment, including transport incubators that enable the medical stuff to perform resuscitation procedures in the first seconds after the birth.

“Previously, babies requiring special natal care were transferred to other healthcare facilities. Now our specialists will be able to nurse children born in a very poor condition. Mothers can be allowed to stay with their kids at the NICU,” Head Doctor Viktor Gurko said.

Igor Yurkevich chairing the Healthcare Committee at Minsk City Hall said that Minsk pays special attention to ensuring high-quality medical care for mothers and children. Considerable funds are spent on upgrading the infrastructure and building new facilities. The construction of the new building of the children's infectious diseases hospital is slated for completion in Q1 2017. A new hospital is under construction in Brilevichi Neighborhood in Minsk.

“By opening new healthcare establishments and improving the methods of treatment, we achieve considerable progress in terms of demographic security,” Igor Yurkevich noted.

Minsk city clinical hospital No.6 is a multi-functional medical treatment and preventive care institution. Some 5,500 children are born at the maternity ward of the hospital annually.
