‘Moonlight' takes Oscar for best picture

NEW YORK, 27 February (BelTA - TASS) - ‘Moonlight,' directed by Barry Jenkins, was awarded the 2017 Oscar in the prestigious Best Picture category at the 89th Academy Awards.

The organizers at first announced film ‘La La Land,' but then extended apologies as the film's crew mounted the stage to receive the coveted Oscar statuette, saying that it was a mistake and the winning picture was ‘Moonlight.'

Besides ‘Moonlight' and ‘La La Land,' the other nominees in this category were Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, Lion and Manchester by the Sea.

Barry Jenkins' 'Moonlight' was nominated for Oscar in 8 categories. The film tells a story of an African-American man and his upbringing in a poor family in Miami.

Casey Affleck was awarded the 2017 Oscar in the Best Actor in a Leading Role for the film ‘Manchester by the Sea." The other nominees in this category were Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), Ryan Gosling (La La Land), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Denzel Washington (Fences).

Emma Stone has become the Best Actress, according to the Academy for her part in "La La Land".

The other nominees in this category were Isabelle Huppert ‘Elle,' Ruth Negga ‘Loving,' Natalie Portman ‘Jackie' and Meryl Streep ‘Florence Foster Jenkins.'

The 89th Academy Awards was held on the night of February 26 in the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles and broadcast by ABC. The ceremony was aired in 225 countries.
