Military camp near Belarusian nuclear power plant to be finished in 2017

MINSK, 24 February (BelTA) – The military camp near the Belarusian nuclear power plant will be finished in 2017, BelTA learned from Mikhail Filimonov, Director General of the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant, during the session of the Belarusian Energy Ministry's board on 24 February.

According to the source, it is necessary to finish building the military camp in 2017. The military unit in charge of security of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will reside there.

According to Mikhail Filimonov, the welding of the main circulation line of the first power-generating unit is supposed to begin in April. A 330kV distribution substation is supposed to be commissioned this year. Utility water needs to be made available at the construction site. “All the decisions concerning key events at the construction site have been made. Schedules have been specified. It is now necessary to get down to work,” stressed Mikhail Filimonov.

The training of Belarusian nuclear power plant personnel will continue in 2017. Some of the specialists will be trained using a long-term cycle while technicians and blue-collar workers are supposed to enjoy short-term cycle education.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is built using the AES-2006 nuclear power plant design that features VVER-1200 type reactors. The construction site is located 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The power plant will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW). The first unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, with the second one to go online in 2020.
