NANCHANG, 20 October (BelTA - Xinhua) - A large amount of copper coins dating back more than 1,000 years have been found in the city of Jingdezhen, the center of China's historical porcelain industry.
The cache of coins, weighing around four tonnes, were found in a cellar by a villager building a new house in Fuliang County, east China's Jiangxi Province and reported to police.
"Some coins were from Tang Dynasty (618 -- 907), while others were from Song Dynasty (960 -- 1279)," said Li Xincai, with Fuliang cultural relics preservation bureau.
Li said that the excavation is continuing and more coins may be found.
It is very unusual for such a large hoard of coins to be stored randomly in a cellar. They would not have been owned by any individual nor by a bank. The archaeologists are trying to identify of the owner.
Currently, the coins ware stored in the county museum.
