MINSK, 17 December (BelTA) – The demarcation of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border does not directly affect the level of security on this part of the state border, Chairman of the State Border Committee of Belarus Leonid Maltsev told journalists on 17 December, BelTA has learned.
“The engineering structures are built not on the border proper. Some of them may be erected 500 meters away from it depending on particular location,” Leonid Maltsev explained.
As for the demarcation itself, he emphasized that the expected timeframe for this process was announced some time ago. Leonid Maltsev believes the demarcation of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border will take from eight to ten years. Among other things, this is due to the difficult landscape (mires, forests, etc.). Besides, it is important to ensure simultaneous work on both sides of the border.
