Hope for fast solution to water supply problem in Ukraine's conflict zone

MINSK, 7 December (BelTA) – The water supply problem in several areas of Lugansk Oblast, Ukraine is supposed to be resolved as soon as possible, BelTA learned from Martin Sajdik, the special representative of the OSCE chairperson-in-office in the trilateral contact group on resolving the situation in Ukraine's east, on 7 December.

“We have also discussed the vital problem of water supply in several areas of Lugansk Oblast. We agreed that legal and technical solutions will have to be found fast, within one week. I strongly hope that this time deeds will follow the words,” said Martin Sajdik.

Mass media reports indicated earlier that the Popasnaya water canal stopped delivering water to Lugansk Oblast on 1 December when its installations lost power.

Apart from that, the opening of an additional checkpoint in Zolotoye was once again discussed during the talks on Ukraine in Minsk.

Sessions of the subgroups on political and humanitarian affairs took place in Minsk on 7 December. A meeting of the subgroup on security affairs took place in Minsk the day before. As far as security affairs are concerned, Martin Sajdik said that attention had been primarily focused on choosing new locations for separating forces and assets. Measures to relieve tensions along the contact line had been discussed, too.
