Belarusian State University in favor of balance between classroom instruction, independent studies

MINSK, 25 October (BelTA) – It is necessary to strike a wise balance between independent work of university students and their classroom instruction, BelTA learned from Rector of the Belarusian State University Sergei Ablameiko during the International Congress on Computer Science on 25 October.

The Rector of the Belarusian State University noted that the entire world is moving into the virtual environment and the online environment. The education industry is becoming more mobile, too. “When I meet with rectors and professors of other universities, particularly Western ones, they say that their education process relies heavily on independent work of their students. For instance, in one university like that classroom instruction occupies 19 hours per week. I believe it is not enough. The Belarusian State University believes that classroom instruction matters. Not even the brightest students will do everything on their own. Oversight is necessary. A certain balance is necessary,” said Sergei Ablameiko.

The International Congress on Computer Science gathered about 300 scientists and the best specialists in information systems and technologies from Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Brazil, Lithuania, Germany, France, USA, UK, Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

The three-day forum features plenary sessions and 12 panel discussions. The discussions will focus on aerospace information and telecommunication systems and technologies, pedagogical aspects of a hi-tech education environment, geoinformation systems, data security and computer data analysis, and smart information systems.

The International Congress on Computer Science will end on 27 October.

The congress has been organized by the Belarusian State University, the Eurasian Association of Universities, the United Informatics Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, and the association of Belarusian IT companies and computer science research agencies Infopark.
