Belarusian nuclear power plant to be protected against drones

MINSK, 24 August (BelTA) – The Belarusian nuclear power plant will be protected against drones, BelTA learned from Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk after the media tour, which focused on Belarus-Russia interaction in nuclear energy, on 24 August.

According to the source, work is in progress to put measures in place in order to protect the Belarusian nuclear power plant against unmanned aerial vehicles.

Mikhail Mikhadyuk said that the Belarusian nuclear power plant is designed to withstand the impact of a falling aircraft or its parts. He reminded that Belarus welcomed the IAEA's Site and External Events Design (SEED) mission in January. That mission evaluated the nuclear power plant's design from the point of view of physical protection against travelling aircraft. The mission experts concluded that the Belarusian government had duly taken into account all the external threats while designing the nuclear power plant near Ostrovets.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is built using the Russian standard Generation III+ design AES-2006 near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, with the second one to go online in 2020.
