Belarusian local authorities criticized for poor job creation efforts

MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) – The local authorities are not taking enough efforts to create more new jobs, Belarusian Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov told the media after the government conference chaired by Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on 22 August, BelTA has learned.

“Only two regions fulfilled the six-month task in full. About 31,000 out of 33,000 new jobs were created. It is a serious wakeup call. In 2016, when the task was set forth, and in the early 2017 the local and regional authorities reported that everything was great,” Andrei Kobyakov said.

He drew attention to the fact that the target for 2017 is to create 70,000 new jobs. “This is the task both for local authorities and also for the ministries,” the head of government said.

He also noted that the situation with the employment in the country has improved markedly: there are more vacancies than the people who are officially registered as unemployed. A year ago, the situation was the opposite.
