Belarusian disease diagnostics startup shortlisted for international award

MINSK, 15 October (BelTA) – A Belarusian medical IT startup has been shortlisted for the prestigious international award Aspirin Social Innovation Award 2018 (Germany). The winner will be chosen through voting. Interested parties have until 25 October 2018 (23:59:59 GMT) to vote for their favorite social impact pioneer, BelTA has learned.

The Deep Dee startup relies on medical equipment and artificial intelligence. The team is busy creating a way to diagnose diseases early using fundus images. The algorithms can already diagnose diabetes. The team intends to learn to “see” other diseases, too.

The Deep Dee project was born during a Social Weekend hackathon in 2017. One year later the Belarusians went international: the team has already won the Emerging Europe Award (London) in the category Social Impact Startup of the Year.

The Aspirin Social Innovation Award helps promote innovative projects. This year's prize pool stands at €100,000. For instance, in 2016 the award went to a project to create a mobile clinic for children in Mexico. The clinic used doll robots to establish communication between little patients and their doctors. In 2017 the award went to a startup, which deals with the problem of diagnosing breast cancer by creating a pocketsize screening device.
