TALLINN, 30 May (BelTA) - Belarus shows interest in Estonian electronic criminal trial practices, BelTA learned from official representative of the Investigative Committee of Belarus Yulia Goncharova who is attending the Tallinn E-Governance Conference.

In her words, it is importance that this area is part of e-government. The electronic criminal case system (E-toimik) is successfully applied in Estonia and covers the whole system of pre-trial and judicial proceedings. This makes it possible to significantly save time, ensure the transparency of the criminal process and is actively used by defense, prosecution and judges.

“Access to this information system is carried out with the help of an ID-card or a Mobile-ID. A person does not even need to leave the house to get information. It is enough just to enter the corresponding system,” Yulia Goncharova said.

In her words, the head of the Belarusian Investigative Committee named the development of a unified automated information system as one of the agency's priorities. The Investigative Committee is currently studying the experience of other countries, in particular the ЕАEU. Estonia has become the first EU state, the experience of which is studied by the Belarusian agency.

The Tallinn E-Governance Conference is attended by more than 80 countries. Participants discuss issues of privacy and data protection and the impact of the EU's General Data Protection Regulation on the EU and the rest of the world. The conference is organized by the Estonian E-Governance Academy in cooperation with the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government of Sweden, and the city of Tallinn.
