Belarus ready to step up cooperation with U.S. in science, education

MINSK, 23 March (BelTA) – Belarus intends to develop cooperation with the USA under scientific and educational program in high technology, Chairman of the State Science and Technology Committee Alexander Shumilin noted as he met with Honorary Consul of Belarus in Florida Mikhail Morgulis, BelTA learned from the press service of the Science and Technology Committee.

Alexander Shumilin and Mikhail Morgulis exchanged views on prospects of Belarus-USA cooperation in science, technology, and innovations. They also discussed ways to intensify contacts established at the eMerge Americas tech expo, first of all under educational and exchange programs.

An assistant professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases will do a long-term internship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (the Eric Pamer Lab) in New York. Ten Belarusian law students will also do an internship in the United States. Moreover, the Belarusian Hi-Tech Park has prepared an educational program on investment “Startup for beginners” in cooperation with the venture capital firm 500 Startups. The program has already been launched in Grodno and at Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics.

Around $220,000 worth of contracts were signed at the international high-tech expo eMerge Americas. The United Institute of Informatics Problems of Belarus' National Academy of Sciences (NASB) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases sealed a $130,000 deal. The NASB Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry reached an agreement with GourmetPhile LLC to supply $90,000 worth of immune system tests.

In 2017, Belarusian organizations had $13 million worth of contracts with American partners (NASB - $506,400, Adani - $12.6 million, Belarusian National Technical University - $40,000).
