Belarus ready to host WANO emergency response conference in 2018

OSTROVETS DISTRICT, 1 June (BelTA) – Belarus is ready to host an emergency response conference of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) in 2018, Belarus' Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk told the participants of the WANO conference held in Belarus from 30 May to 1 June to discuss support for new power-generating units of nuclear power plants, BelTA has learned.

“The government and the Energy Ministry have suggested holding the next WANO conference on emergency response in 2018 also in Minsk. Emergency response is one of the key aspects in ensuring safe operation of a nuclear power plant,” Mikhail Mikhadyuk noted.

He emphasized that ensuring the safety of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) is a priority in the implementation of the nuclear power project. Belarus will strictly follow the recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency and will be open to cooperation with all countries during the construction and operation of the plant. “We are ready to answer all questions regarding the status of the project, and receive foreign delegations at the BelNPP site,” Mikhail Mikhadyuk said.

Belarus has intergovernmental agreements on peaceful uses of nuclear energy with a number of countries. Work is underway to conclude agreements with Turkey, Bangladesh, and other states.

WANO unites all the operators of nuclear power plants (a total of about 450 power-generating units). The organization aims to improve the safe operation of all the nuclear power plants in the world. The BelNPP joined WANO in 2016.
