Belarus' KGB unmasks foreign secret agent

MINSK, 3 May (BelTA) – The Belarusian State Security Committee (KGB) has exposed a retired colonel spying for a foreign country, KGB Chairman Valery Vakulchik said in an interview with Belarus 1 TV Channel, BelTA informs.

According to Valery Vakulchik, counterintelligence-related matters were in the focus of his working meeting with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on 2 May. “Needless to say, I cannot disclose the details on TV and in public. It is safe to say, however, that KGB has brought the quality of work in this field to another level. This effort has become more effective. It helps solve the most negative and serious crimes in a timely manner,” he noted.

“For instance, we have recently unmasked a foreign intelligence agent. He is a high-ranking military officer (a retired colonel) who had access to classified information in the State Secretariat of Belarus' Security Council and to some documents submitted by the State Security Committee,” Valery Vakulchik added.

“He has been caught red-handed. He has already admitted his guilt. A full-scale investigation is now underway to solve the crime and hold him accountable in line with the law,” the KGB chairman said.
