Belarus' justice minister meets with HCCH Secretary General in St. Petersburg

MINSK, 23 May (BelTA) – Belarus' Justice Minister Oleg Slizhevsky had a working meeting with Secretary General of the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH) Christophe Bernasconi on the sidelines of the seventh St. Petersburg International Legal Forum. The information has been posted on the website of the Justice Ministry.

Christophe Bernasconi thanked Oleg Slizhevsky for attending the meeting on the HCCH general issues and policy which was held in the Hague in March. Christophe Bernasconi also recalled that Belarus signed the Convention of 23 November 2007 on the International Recovery of Child Support and Other Forms of Family Maintenance. The sides also discussed the measures taken by Belarus to ratify this Convention.

The parties considered the plans for holding in 2018 HCCH-themed activities that can be dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the organization.

A separate topic of the meeting was the prospects of the HCCH's participation in the work related to the international legal support of the transport system concept “New Silk Road” promoted by China in cooperation with Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus and other states. Oleg Slizhevsky pointed to the importance of the international legal support while the concept is in the initial stages of implementation. According to the justice minister, the HCCH's experience can be useful in the Silk Road concept. Oleg Slizhevsky called for focusing the efforts not only on the development of the new regulation but also on the opportunity to use the existing conventions to the greatest extent possible.

Christophe Bernasconi thanked Oleg Slizhevsky for ensuring the active work of the Belarusian Justice Ministry within the framework of the HCCH.
