Belarus joins international organs exchange association Foedus

MINSK, 8 September (BelTA) – Belarus has joined the international organs exchange association Foedus, Oleg Rummo, Head of the National Science and Practice Center for Organ and Tissue Transplantation, said during the Minsk international medical forum on 7 September, BelTA has learned.

Eurotransplant is the biggest organ exchange association in Europe. Another similar association is Scandiatransplant that covers mainly the Nordic countries and a population of about 27 million. These organizations represent a voluntary association of public health institutions in the field of transplantation for optimal selection of an organ for a specific recipient and for rapid response and assistance to patients.

"Those countries which, for one reason or another, do not participate in these organizations, join a special association which facilitates cross-border exchange of organs. Starting from this year Belarus is a member of this international association,” Oleg Rummo said. “There are no tough rules and requirements but the goals that the association pursues match with ours, namely to increase the number of organ transplants, to raise their quality and to improve the quality of life of an organ recipient through a better choice of compatible donor-recipient pairs,” Oleg Rummo noted.

The cooperation in the Belarus-Russia Union State is also very important, Oleg Rummo said. A variety of educational activities, scientific projects, legislative initiatives are carried out as part of the scientific programs of the Belarus-Russia Union State. This provides an opportunity to scientists, teachers and specialists from Russia and Belarus to combine efforts, complement each other, learn and adopt best practices, he added. "Thanks to such cooperation we improve the quality of medical care and make advances in this difficult, high-tech, cost-intensive but very gratifying and honorable medical field as organs transplantation," he said.

The international medical forum was held in Minsk on 7-8 September. The leading scientists and doctors of Belarus and specialists from Russia, Japan, Sweden, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Austria, Germany and Italy made reports on the main challenges in cardiology, interventional surgery, transplantation, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and so on.
