Belarus, Cuba discuss prospects of cooperation in healthcare, biotechnologies

MINSK, 18 May (BelTA) – Prospects of cooperation in healthcare and biotechnologies were discussed at the latest session of the Belarusian-Cuban commission on cooperation in science and technology, the press service of the State Science and Technology Committee of Belarus told BelTA.

Chairman of the State Science and Technology Committee of Belarus Alexander Shumilin remarked that healthcare, biotechnologies, agriculture, and mechanical engineering are promising avenues for advancing scientific, technical, and innovative cooperation with Cuba. The first joint project in the sphere of biotechnologies is now being implemented in the country to produce high-activity strains of bacteria with a broad-range antagonistic effect for protecting crops.

Alexander Shumilin said that the signing of the new executive program on Belarusian-Cuban cooperation in science, technology, and innovation for the 2018-2020 period in August and the organization of a contest of joint scientific and technical projects for the 2019-2020 period were important steps in invigorating Belarusian-Cuban cooperation.

The official also mentioned prospects of bilateral cooperation in the sphere of information and communication technologies and high technologies. Projects in association with Belarus' Hi-Tech Park are expected to be implemented.

The second session of the Belarusian-Cuban commission on cooperation in science and technology took place in Minsk on 17-18 May. The Cuban delegation was led by Deputy Minister of Science, Technology, and Environment Danilo Alonso Mederos. The first session took place in Havana in May 2016.
