Russia to deploy fighter jet regiment in Belarus by 2015

MINSK, 23 April (BelTA) – By 2015 Russia plans to deploy a fighter jet regiment in Belarus. The statement was made by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu as he met with President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko on 23 April, BelTA has learned.

“We are starting discussing the plan to set up an air base with fighter jets here. We hope that an air force regiment will be here already in 2015,” said the Russian Defense Minister.

According to Sergei Shoigu, there are plans to set up an air force command and control center in Belarus in 2013 and deploy the first on-duty flight of fighters.

“We plan to continue thinking about matters required to enhance the defensive capability of our Belarusian colleagues and brothers,” he added.
