President: Belarus needs scientific centers to develop new materials

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko tasked big industrial associations and scientific organizations with setting up scientific centers to develop new materials. The Belarusian leader made the statement at the 5th Belarusian People's Congress on 22 June, BelTA has learned.

“We need to change our approach to introducing innovations in the real economy sector. I set forth a concrete task before big industrial associations and scientific organizations to set up scientific centers to develop new materials: new sorts of steel (Belarusian Steel Works), new composite materials (Belneftekhim and the Construction and Architecture Ministry), new timber and plate products (Bellesbumprom and others). In strategically important sectors we need to approach the world-class level,” said Alexander Lukashenko.

The head of state drew attention of the delegates to the concrete tasks for every sector. Thus, the Belarusian leader named an increased output of value-added products such as engineering materials for mechanical engineering, chemical yarn, and other competitive products as an overriding task for the petrochemical industry. According to Alexander Lukashenko, special attention will be attached to the industrial development of the Petrikov potash deposit and the increase in the output of potash fertilizers. The implementation of the project will create more than 2,000 new jobs in the Polesye region.

“The domestic mechanical engineering and machine tool technology acquires greater significance today. Without it, we will still have to buy foreign means of production, depending on such imports,” the President stressed.

As for transport engineering, according to the head of state, investment resources with the state support will be focused on large breakthrough projects such as the production of Geely cars, expansion of the production of BelAZ trucks, modernization of MAZ production and vehicle components.
